I make my bed every morning when I wake up. If I'm in a rush and for some reason, I'm unable to, I somehow know it's going to be one of those days. Who cares, right? It's not really a big deal to most people (unless there's a little OCD), but it's probably one of the most important things you can do.
When I originally started my website, it was because I wanted to share the love I have for exciting and bold foods while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While I cook multiple times a week and meal prep regularly there always seems to be some sort of obstacle in my way as to why I wasn't able to post. Either I worked too long and got home too late and the lighting was bad for a picture, death in the family, job loss, moving, computers crashing, pet hospital visits, long hours, or just being plain exhausted there seemed to always be something. Now that's not meant to give me an excuse not to do something I commit myself to, but sometimes life beats the crap out of you. Life has a funny way of reminding you that you may or may not be on the right path. What is the right path? That's the problem many of us face on a daily basis, but what I know for sure is that life is too short to be anything but happy.
Happiness is the reason why I decided to add "Food for Thought" to my blog. Your mind, maybe more than anything needs to be in top condition in order to keep you on that path to happiness, success, and fit. Without it, we tend to fall into those slumps, and each day we forget to give back to ourselves makes it easier to keep forgetting until we lose touch with who we are and what drives us. One day turns into one week, turning into one month, and before we know it, a year or years go by and we don't know what we've done with ourselves. It is essential to take time out for yourself, one way or another, a little bit each day because believe it or not, the most important project you have to work on is yourself. It's the one thing you for sure have every single day of your life. Believe me, I know that life happens, and most of the time you have to do what it takes just to make ends meet. There are a lot of things out of your control, but you can control the way you react. If we all had our dream jobs we wouldn't have to take time out for ourselves because we would be doing the thing we love every single day, but let's face it, that's not the case for most of us.
It's no secret that stress is a risk factor in life. I mean, it increases cortisol levels, risks of diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's, and headaches. People with high stress are more likely to be worried, anxious, depressed, or even suicidal. Seriously, the list goes on, it's pretty crazy! It's normal to have stress throughout life, otherwise, we would be walking zombies, but it's managing that stress in positive ways (or as positive as you can make it) and taking the time to decompress. Whether you do an open mic night, write, sing, meditate using apps like Headspace, dance, go to therapy, call a friend, whatever happiness for you is that day - you need to find that little piece that allows you to release stress and anxiety every day no matter what's going on.
I know it's easy to say next week I'll start eating better, or working out, or taking a class, or whatever it is that you want to do. Unfortunately, many of us set deadlines that we never meet because of this. You have to make it start at some point or it's never going to happen. When I was a kid and my mom would tell me to make my bed I never really saw the point because I always figured that it was a waste of time... I'm just going to get back in it to sleep, right? At some point in my life, I saw something that said "Make your bed every morning, it's the first accomplishment you can make every day." It really struck a chord with me and ever since I've made my bed. If you start your day with a positive win, it's easier to do more than you are wanting to accomplish. Do that one thing for yourself each day, you'll be glad you did.
Did you make your bed today?
